Name/Work Name: Karamatsu Matsuno / Larix
Canon: Osomatsu-San
Canon Point: Episode 16
AU/CRAU: N
Age: 21
History: Karamatsu's history is pretty average, all things considered. Sure, he was born as part a litter of identical sextuplets into a post-Occupation Japan with a paper-thin fourth wall and no regard for the laws of reality, but as far as anime childhoods go, it was pretty uneventful. He never had to go on some kind of epic monster-slaying journey, he never unlocked some kind of hidden magical powers at the tender age of 14, and he never had to go avenge his family over some bloody tragedy. Karamatsu's childhood was pretty carefree, mostly involving running around with his brothers picking on the other neighbourhood kids and terrorizing the local conman like the spoiled brats they were.
Things were good for a little while, until the middle school years. The boys were reaching the age where the novelty of being a set of six was starting to wear off. Constantly being mistaken for your brothers is never really fun, but at least as children they could take advantage of it and cause chaos. But by now? That was getting pretty boring. Not to mention having to share a bed, share clothing, share hairbrushes... Nothing they owned really belonged to one individual. What even was individuality? These were the years to find out.
As each boy started to branch out from their weird little pod and develop their own interests and personalities, Karamatsu found himself really idolizing a particular singer, and he decided the best way to stop being a carbon copy of his brothers was to try to be a carbon copy of someone else, instead. He even went so far as to join the drama club so he could really develop his new character type. It started out much the same as any other awkward teenage identity crisis-- full of Trying Too Hard and not knowing where to draw the line between his true self and his persona. Except Karamatsu never really outgrew that part. He spent the rest of middle- and high-school being that Cool Loner Guy/Tortured Artist Type, much to the exasperation of everyone around him. Even after graduation high school, he kept at it.
That's... pretty much all he's kept at since then.
Karamatsu and his brothers still have one thing in common after all these years: They're a bunch of losers. Unemployed, no degree, and still all living with their parents... Why bother planning for the future when everything they need is right there, right now? Even that time their parents nearly divorced and shattered their perfect plan wasn't enough of a scare to get them to change too much. In the end, the Matsuno siblings never quit being a bunch of chaotic brats and local terrors. Maybe the hijinks they get up to these days are a little more intense (one time Karamatsu was kidnapped for a ransom and had his plight ignored by his entire family, and another time he just about married a flower demon) but for the most part they seem to be resolved and moved on fromby the next episode soon enough.
So yeah. Pretty much a normal, peaceful life. But now he's made a deal with a witch, and not only is he going to have to actually work consistently, but he's going to be without his brothers for the first time in his life, too. Both of these are startling new developments. Let's see how it turns out.
Personality: Painful.
Karamatsu's a narcissist to the extreme and it's not hard to tell just by looking at him: Even when he's not gazing lovingly into a mirror or wearing a shirt with his own face screen-printed on, there's the way he leans against vertical surfaces like he's taking part in some kind of invisible photoshoot, and he's usually wearing the fashion to match. It's almost like he's waiting for someone to take notice and coo about how cool he is, daring to go against society and be a cool brooding loner.
It just gets worse when he opens his mouth. When in a group, it's not something he does very much, because he is really into the whole "man of few words" schtick. There's a lot of thought and care and mental rehearsing that goes into his words in these kinds of situations, as though everything he says has to be completely profound... even if he's doing little more than just announcing that he doesn't have any life goals (taking life as it comes is a cool guy thing!) or just pointing out the obvious. Almost nothing he has to say is nearly worth the dramatics he puts into it, though he doesn't seem to be aware of that fact.
Actually, Karamatsu genuinely seems to have a shaky grasp of reality. It goes beyond deflecting the insults and cold shoulders he gets from his brothers and into actual delusions of grandeur. If the girls he's been staring at for the past ten minutes keep glancing to him and whispering to eachother, they can only be talking about how cool he is, not talking about what a creep he's being. If people cringe and utter the word "painful," somehow he is caught in a tragic hedgehog's dilemma and it's not a scoff at his hideous fashion choices at all.
At the same time, he's no completely up his own ass. It's just a little easier to believe that the reason the people close to him ignore him isn't because he's a loser, but because he's just too cool for them. And for all his talking about himself, he's actually pretty sensitive to the needs of others. He can empathize greatly with people who express some form of loneliness (whether he's spying on someone who's monologuing about being alone, or not wanting to leave the side of someone he feels responsible for), and he does what he can to ensure that those close to him are emotionally supported and otherwise well taken care of... Even if he goes to overdramatic limits for it. His brothers are ill? Oh, tap water won't do, it's time to CLIMB A MOUNTAIN to get the finest water! There might be a liiittle bit of an ulterior motive in there in that he wants someone to acknowledge how selfless and devoted he is, but when you get down to it, his love is honest and pure.
Not that he's an entirely angelic being. Not even close. Like the rest of his brothers, Karamatsu's got a bit of a selfish streak going on. If he gets something nice? He's going to try to keep it all to himself. Something good happens for someone else? He is shameless enough to try to get the same thing by doing the same thing right then and there. And, of course, he will happily join in on group efforts to terrorize the youngest sibling, whether it's by stealing his pachinko winnings or causing a ruckus at his part-time job (that's a special case, though-- it's been stated in some interview that they wouldn't pull that shit with any of the other sextuplets).
And he does tune down the persona often enough within the comforts of his own home. Or, in the context of a game, perhaps if he grows close enough to someone he shares close quarters with. He may not be particularly less embarrassing as a human being at these times, but he's much less of a tryhard and more willing to be a lazy slob and join in on inane, childish antics. He never matured 100%, after all.Probably not even 30%.
Debt: He's doing this for his brothers! Working hard for a life where none of them have to work hard. G...ood...
Inventory: -Leather Jacket
-Tanktop with his face on it
-Sunglasses
-Blue sequined pants
-Acoustic Guitar
-Pocket mirror
Abilities: THE GIFT OF GAG. What does this mean? When the comedic is timing is right, Karamatsu can do things like break the fourth wall, pull objects from out of nowhere, quickly change his outfit, and otherwise defy the laws of physics. If the mood becomes serious, however, this power is all but nullified until things lighten up again.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
+ Despite being a freeloading NEET, Karamatsu's actually a pretty hard worker when he wants to be! Not only is this proven when all the siblings go through a ton of part-time jobs to earn money for rental girlfriends, but Karamatsu himself also meticulously goes through fashion magazines and puts sticky notes and annotations all over the place. It's very well organized. Not only that, but he taught himself a whole bunch of English just for the sake of sounding really cool. Imagine how handy these skills could be if he actually learned how to prioritize.
+ Musical Talent! He can play guitar and sing, how nice.
+ The guy is resilient as all hell. Growing up in a household of 6 rowdy boys really toughens you up. He can take sharp blows to the gut and heavy blunt objects to the face and get a flagpole shoved up his butt and he'll be just fine.
+ He is intensely devoted and loyal once he feels close to someone. Like I said before, his love is pure.
+ He's pretty true to himself? As much as one has to groan at who Karamatsu's self is, at least he isn't some shallow fake guy who changes his face as often as he changes his underwear. Even if you beg him to. He'd consider this integrity a strength, anyway.
- Did you think being in a drama club meant he'd be good at improv? HA HA. NOPE. When something wild and unexpected happens, Karamatsu's persona completely falters and it takes him a good few minutes to regain his Cool Guy composure.
- For all his dramatic posing, he's kind of a huge klutz. It takes almost nothing to get him to fall off bridges or roofs, or manage to get his feet run over by a passing truck...
- On a similar note, he's got incredibly luck. If someone targets one of the sextuplets at random, either for a kidnapping or to punch the nearest thing, odds are it is going to be Karamatsu, even when things aren't actually his fault. Poor guy exists to be a living Buttmonkey trope.
- Planning ahead is not his forte. At times he takes pride in having no plans for the future, as noted further up, but other times he just kind of does things without any regard for long-term consequences. A little from living such a carefree life, a little from just being kind of a dolt.
- His narcissism is definitely his biggest downfall. Humour him a little and he can be suckered into doing just about anything in return just because he's happy for the attention.
